Notes: |
La Grande Storia degli Scacchi has 'William Hunter' where Di Felice has 'Henry John Clinton Andrews' and Gaige has 'Andrews'. Forster has 'Hunter, Andrew' and indicates that he played under the pseudonym 'Andrews'. The Huddersfield College Magazine of Sep. 1875 (p.256) has 'Mr. Hunter, Glasgow'. Gaige and La Grande Storia degli Scacchi have 'Jenkins' where Forster and Di Felice has 'Jenkin, John'. Di Felice gives start date Aug. 3, 1875; Forster gives Aug. 2, 1875. Forster notes that the games Hunter-Spens, Jenkin-Spens and Hunter-Jenkin were unfinished during the congress and were played out some weeks later, so the results for the first 2 of these pairings differ from the report in the Chess Players' Chronicle, which is the version given by Gaige and Di Felice. Thus, Gaige, Di Felice and the Huddersfield College Magazine give Spens-Jenkin as a loss for Spens; Forster gives it as a win for Spens. Gaige and Di Felice indicate that Hunter-Spens was unfinished; Forster gives it as a win for Hunter. The Field gives Ranken-Wayte as a win for Ranken. Other sources give it as a draw. The Chess Players' Chronicle also notes that Martin 'had to resign several of his games', by which is meant that he forfeited them. Which were forfeited is not indicated, so we count them here as played and lost, which will cause Martin's rating to be underestimated. |
