Place: Glasgow |
Start date: 17 July 1888 |
End date: 21 July 1888 |
|
Notes: |
This was a 20-player knockout tournament with a single game per pairing (apart from draws). In the report in the British Chess Magazine, 'J. Sanderson' appears in the player list, but then in the results his name is given as 'Sandeman', so it might actually have been Patrick Sandeman, or even David Sandeman, but this is unclear. After two rounds 5 players remained, but in the third round, the report lists a win by Marshall over Sandeman [sic] again, even though that result appeared in the second round. It is not clear why they would have played again, and if so what would have been done if Marshall lost the second time, so i will ignore this result, and assume that Marshall got a bye. The third round game between Chirrey and J. Mackenzie was forfeited by the latter, and thus not included here. In the final pool of three, Marshall won against both Chirrey and McCombie, who divided second prize. |
