Biographical data
Name: Hampton, J. William
   Also known as: J.W.
Born:
Died:

Notes:
Gillam has 'W.J. Hampton' at London 1868-1869, while Löwenthal and Medley have 'J.W. Hampton' (pp.2,4), 'W. Hampton' (pp.8,10,11) and 'W.J. Hampton' (p.13), and Löwenthal in the book of the 1862 Congress in London (p.xlvi) has 'W.I. Hampton'. Le Palamède (1836, p.227) and the Chess Player's Chronicle of 1844 (pp.156, 192) and 1849 (pp.264, 346) have 'W. Hampton' of the St. George's Club. Bell's Life in London (9 May 1841, p.3) has 'J. William Hampton' as a member of the St. George's Club. This seems to indicate that he went by his middle name, which might explain the alternation of initials. Or could there be two players, a 'J.W. Hampton' and a 'W.J. Hampton'? The Era of 10 Feb. 1861 (p.14) first lists one of the players in a handicap tournament only as 'J.W.' and then later refers to him as 'W. Hampton'. Saint-Elme-le-Duc, in Le Palamède (1845, p.30), and Kieseritzky, in La Régence (1851, p.205), refer to the brothers Hampton, so presumably Thomas Inglis Hampton and J. William Hampton were brothers. The year of birth is from Land and Water (15 Feb. 1873), sent to me by Tim Harding, but is suspect because this source also claims that William Hampton played against McDonnell in 1838, and we know that the latter died in 1835, at which time Hampton would have been 16 or 17 years old if he had been born in 1818.
