Notes: |
Di Felice has 'Thomson, John Graham' at this event, but according to Gaige, he was born in 1855 or 1856 and so would have been about 12 years old at this event. It is more likely that it was W. Thompson, who played at other Counties Chess Association Tournaments in the early 1870s. Di Felice also has 'W.F. Ball' at this event, but the Chess Player's Quarterly Chronicle of Nov. 1868 (vol.1, p.119) clearly shows that it was 'A. Ball'. The report in the Chess Player's Quarterly Chronicle also says that as well as the unplayed Skipworth-Ball game, Cutler and Ball both defaulted some of their games, but which ones are not mentioned, although the crosstable suggests that one of them might have been Grimshaw-Ball. The York Herald of 15 Aug. 1868 (p.7) shows Grimshaw-Ball as unplayed. Thus, I record all as played apart from Skipworth-Ball and Grimshaw-Ball. |
