Notes: |
Di Felice and Forster have 'Hodges, W.' at this event; La Grande Storia degli Scacchi has 'Hodges, Albert'. The meeting began on 31 July 1876, but according to the Westminster Papers (1 Sept. 1876, p.85), play did not start until 1 Aug. 1876. The meeting finished on 5 Aug. 1876, but the Illustrated London News of 2 Sep. 1876 (p.231) and Forster (p.94) explain that the game between Burn and Owen was not played at Cheltenham, but was played a week later on 12 Aug. 1876 at Hooton, Cheshire. The Illustrated London News of 26 Aug. 1876 (p.207) says that neither Ranken nor Thorold 'played the whole of their games'. Forster's crosstable indicates which games were unplayed. |
