| Notes from Tim Harding have given me almost complete results from the main tournament, from Land and Water, The Field, and the City of London Chess Magazine. I have checked the Field to complete these results, particularly with Section II, in which all the losers of the first round competed, for third and fourth prizes. In the main event, Wisker forfeited to Sothers in Round 3, when the score between them was +1-1. Beveridge won one game by default against Lambert. The score of Sothers-Lord in round 4 does not seem to be reported. I will use a soft result of 1-0, here. It is not clear whether there were draws in the final pool between Sothers and de Vere. The Field of 8 Nov. 1873 and the Illustrated London News of 15 Nov. 1873 give 'Walrond' as the opponent of 'Stevens', but in the 22 Nov. issue of the Field, his opponent is listed as 'Manning' and 'Manning' then appears in subsequent rounds. Tim Harding's notes have 'Walrond', but I will guess that the player who participated was 'A.S. Manning' (though it might have been Julius A. Manning?). Sothers won first prize; Zukertort won second. In the Section II part of the event, for third and fourth prizes, Martin forfeited his second game to Rabbeth, Nicholson forfeited his second game to Connford, Bird forfeited his second game to Pfahl, and Lambert forfeited his second game to G.H. Rippin. Although Cutler is reported to have beaten Lowson in round 2 of Section II, Lowson then appears in the third round, playing Maas. Is there an error here? The result of Ballard-Pfahl in round four, is not given in the Field. I will use a soft score of 1-0. The Field is not clear on the exact results of the final pool, but the City of London Chess Magazine (from Tim Harding) gives Maas-G.H. Rippin 2-0 and indicates that Ballard won a game against Maas, so that Maas-Ballard must have been 2-1 (though there might have been draws). Ballard-G.H. Rippin in the final pool must have been 2-1 for Ballard, since we know Rippin won one game, but Ballard won the match, but again, there might also have been draws. |
